Should We Worry About Too Much Fire in the Year of the Wood Horse?

(Full text of article published in The Philippine Star, January 19, 2014)

It’s lights out for the Water Snake as the Wood Horse takes the focus in 2014. For feng shui followers all over the world, such annual changeover is regarded with great anticipation. Even for non-feng shui believers, the question often raised is: what will the new year bring?

Given the fiery and volatile temperament of the Horse, there is reason to believe that 2014 will be a period of excitement and adventure. How did the world fare in previous Horse years? Important events in the last Wood Horse year in 1954 could be quite foreboding. That year, the USA detonated a 15-megaton hydrogen bomb at the Bikini Atoll. Colonel Nasser seized power and became Prime Minister of Egypt. Australia broke diplomatic relations with the USSR. A powerful earthquake hit Algeria. Hurricane Carol, one of the worst tropical cyclones on record, affected the USA. It was not all bad news, however, as innovations in electronics, entertainment, and aviation shone through. Among others, it was the year of the first color television, the first transistor radio, and important breakthroughs in American broadcasting.

Currently in the Philippines to present her forecasts for the Year of the Wood Horse is London-based international feng shui expert, Marites Allen. A few days before her Annual Feng Shui Updates held on December 7 at the F1 Hotel Manila, we sought an interview with her to get her predictions and to find out if any of the 1954 events lurk in 2014.

Some highlights of that interview:

Q: What is the general outlook for 2014 from the feng shui perspective?

A: Next year is an aggressive Horse year. In a year like this, our best strategy is to stay low key and protected. Risk taking should be kept to a minimum; instead we should be on the lookout for wealth-making opportunities that may be hidden in unlikely events.

Q: By “aggressive,” you mean…

A:  The Horse is a volatile animal, which indicates a possibly rebellious year. Serious international conflicts are likely. The destiny chart of the year has two Aggressive Swords and six Conflict Stars. These symbols mean that power struggles and politicking are strong. Earth- and water-related disasters are also indicated.

Q: Would you say that this rebellious and conflict outlook will have a major influence on the Philippines?

A: The 2014 destiny chart shows that the Northwest and Southeast sectors have the Misfortune Star and the Argumentative Star, respectively. If we look at the Malacañang Palace, we will see that the front and back directions of the seat of the national government are located in these afflicted sectors. On that basis, we may have some challenging prospects for the country.

Q: How about brighter prospects? You mentioned wealth-making opportunities earlier.

A: We may expect money-making opportunities in the first two quarters of the year, thus business expansion is good in the first half, but not so good in the second half of the year. Restaurant and marketing industries, which are Fire element businesses, will flourish. The mining industry, being of the Earth element because it involves gems and precious metals, is stable. Unfortunately, that cannot be said of the other industries. The business climate will be very challenging and difficult, thus rather than targeting big deals, it is better to close several small deals.

Q: A lot of your followers will be interested to know your forecast on relationships. Your predictions on breakups in previous years were quite accurate. What does 2014 have in store in that area?

A: The presence of the Peach Blossom Star in the destiny chart brings good marriage luck. Next year is a good one for getting married as weddings bring good luck to families. It is also an auspicious year to start a new family or have another baby.

Q: That somehow contradicts earlier reports that had you saying the Wood Horse year is not good for relationships.

A: I might have been misunderstood when I said that the External Flower of Romance Star is also in the chart. That is different from the Peach Blossom Star, which brings positive luck for new romance. Married couples, however, should watch out for the External Flower of Romance star, which could bring extra-marital flings. I also need to mention that the luck of wives will be stronger than the luck of husbands; thus, husbands need plenty of support.

Q: What can we look forward to in terms of health prospects?

A: Health luck is not stable in 2014. Lung and chest ailments will be plenty. Illnesses affecting arms and legs are indicated, and people should be careful about possible limb injuries caused by sharp objects. There’s too much Fire element present, so we need more cooling-down food to balance body heat. Eldest sons will be prone to getting sick, while the youngest son needs to be protected from physical harm.

Q: So what do you suggest we do to attract better opportunities and deflect bad luck next year?

A: There are plenty of cures and enhancers available to address our specific needs for 2014. The best way is for each one to refer to his or her individual forecasts by way of the Fortune and Feng Shui books available at our WOFS stores. These books contain detailed destiny readings for each animal sign, plus valuable feng shui tips to help everyone have a smooth-sailing Year of the Wood Horse.

I, myself, practice what I preach, so I am confident that feng shui works. It helped me in getting my British citizenship sooner than expected and despite many odds. I was also conferred the title Master of Feng Shui by the International Feng Shui Association (IFSA). This group is a renowned global feng shui association based in Singapore and has very strict requirements for the conferment of the title. I’m sure choosing auspicious dates for meeting with them and wearing my lucky dresses with corresponding charms helped.

That’s why I also suggest that feng shui followers check out the latest designs in the Frigga fashion line. Frigga represents a new application of feng shui designed to help people not only to look and feel good, but also to attract good fortune wherever they are.
